of 10,000 people to be replaced by loyal New England land grabbers.

1755

The New England Colony are the first to declare war on Canada, urged on by Benjamin Franklin of Philadelphia. He declares one language, one religion and one nation for North America. It is noteworthy that this was the French claim for her peoples. It is also important to remember that New England has a population of one million people; Canada only has 65,000 people. Benjamin Franklin's press is also calling for invasion of the Ohio Valley to drive the Indians and French from the continent. This is likely the beginning on the American Manifest Destiny thinking?

The population of  Island St Jean (Prince Edward Island) swelled to 4,000 inhabitants as Acadiens fled to the Island.

Fort Beausejour, built in 1749 by the French on the west bank of the Missaguash River near Sackville, New Brunswick, is under siege for two weeks by the Massachusetts volunteers and British regulars before they capitulated. The British had made a direct hit on their bombproof shelter. Louis Du Pont Duchambon de Vergo capitulated. The British renamed the fort, Fort Cumberland

Thousands of New England settlers are pressing into the Ohio Valley, and the Indians are highly concerned.

James Cook (1728-1779) joined the Royal Navy this year and one of his first jobs was to do a detailed survey of the St. Lawrence River to prepare charts of the river to allow General Wolfe to conquer the French at Quebec and secure English domination of North America..

Summer: The Indians and their French allies drive the New England settlers from the Ohio Valley. Benjamin Franklin sees no alternative but to eliminate the French and push the Indians further to the west. He says the French must be driven out now. It is noteworthy that this policy against the Indians would dominate for over the next one hundred years. It is also noteworthy that peoples, who themselves are forced from their own lands in the English land clearing policy, are quick to force others from their lands.

Abbe Joseph Louis le Loutree, Vicar General of the Quebec Bishop with Nova Scotia as his parish, is a priest of physical violence. He ordered men scalped and set the price at 100 livres. He recorded a two-year total of 11,000 livres for scalp expenses. He would order men shot under a flag of truce. He used Church powers to dominate the French Acadians. Governor Cornwallis referred to the Priest as a good for nothing scoundrel, as he placed a 100 pound reward on his head.

The French built Fort Ticonderoga (a place between the waters) at the confluence of Lakes Champlain and George in upper New York.

Some believe the Acadians were deported because the British saw no way to accommodate two groups of British and French subjects that had so many religious and cultural differences. The idea was conceived by (I)-Charles Lawrence (1709-1760) who was lieutenant governor of Nova Scotia (1756-1760). He also developed plans to prevent their return. It is estimated that 75% of Acadians did not return. Others suggest it was simply a land clearing exercise to make room for British subjects on lands already cleared and developed. The deportation and dispersion of these French Métis Neutrals from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick is considered as one of the most pitiful incidents in the French and Indian War, known as the American Phase of the Seven Year War. Others write the expulsion and exile of these Neutral Acadians is one of the saddest episodes in Canadian History. The British burned many of the records of the Acadians to hide their crimes. There can be little doubt the British are a barbaric people and will later starve and land clear their own people.

The start of the Great Expulsion in 1755, many Acadians formed guerrilla bands in the forests, often linking up with their ancient Mi'kmaq allies to fight the British.

Three ships including the Duke William and the Violet go down at sea while deporting the Acadians. Whole families were never heard from again.

Grand-Pre, Acadia was first settled in 1605 through 150 years to the deportation in 1755 when the final chapter is written for Grand-Pré and the Acadians are taken from their homes, their lands abandoned, their homes, barns and other buildings burned to the ground making it impossible for them to return to this place.

Charles Lawrence attempted to annihilate the world of all Acadians.

At Port Latour a few Acadian families survived the English occupation by fishing. The fisherman returned to find their homes burnt and wives and children (72 of them) were gone. They had been shipped to North Carolina and most were never reunited.

Admiral John Byng, the respected Governor of Newfoundland (1742-1745), is executed by firing squad for negligence after he failed to attack a French fleet.

The Magdalen Islands, Quebec was never land cleared of Acadians and to modern times they still consider themselves as a distinct culture separate from Quebec. They still fly the Acadian flag. It is estimated that about 400 shipwrecks are noted arround the island and the survivors are assimilated into the Acadian culture.

The HMS Mars a French Ship captured by the British in 1746 struck Mars Rock near Sandwich Point, at the entrance to Halifax Harbour, N.S.

July: Charles Lawrence (1709-1760) governor Nova Scotia (1756-1760) ordered Acadians Deputies to appear before him in Halifax to take the unqualified Oaths of Allegiance to the Crown of England. They refused, were thrown into prison of Georges Island and eventually deported. More Acadians were rounded up on different pretenses, and eventually loaded into boats and dispersed to British Colonies all long the Atlantic seaboard. Those who fled to northern New Brunswick were hunted down and enslaved to maintain the dykes, roads and fortifications. Many died of starvation and sickness.

THE ACT:   "After mature consideration it was unanimously agreed, that, to prevent as much as possible their attempting to return and molest the settlers that may be set down on their lands, it would be most proper to send them to be distributed amongst the several colonies on the continent, and that a sufficient number of vessels should be hired with all possible expedition for that purpose".

THE INFAMOUS COUNCIL OF NOVA SCOTIA:

Charles Lawrence (1709-1760) from England son Charles John Lawrence
Benjamin Green (1713-1772) from Massachusetts son Rev. Joseph Green and Elizabeth Gerrish
John Collier d-1769 from England

John Rous (1689-1760) from England
Jonathon Belchar (1710-1776) from Massachusetts

Of the 8 to 10 thousand Acadians deported, 3/4 arrived in the American colonies or were incarcerated in Halifax or London. The rest hid in the woods of New Brunswick, or walked to Quebec. Many regrouped in northern New Brunswick, others to Prince Edward Island and some to Nova Scotia. They all lost their lands and equipment, every thing was British dominated.

September: The first victims of Franklins war mongering are the French Acadians of Canada. Their settlements are burned and the people deported to French Louisiana. John Winslow (1703-1774) is the first to expel the Acadians in the Grand Pre area. This 'Land Clearance Program' would continue until 1763. Robert Monckton (1726-1782), a British Army officer, supervised the expulsion of the Acadians. As a result, he was given the position of Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia. Many Acadians fled to the country side. One writer referred to this period as the time of 'One Hundred Years in the Woods'.

September to December: The British Governor of Nova Scotia, Charles Lawrence, serving from July 23, 1756 to September 24, 1762,  expelled and deported eight to ten thousand settlers, spreading them down the Eastern Seaboard to Louisiana where they called themselves Cajuns. Some place the numbers closer to 10,000 people. Col. John Winslow (1703-1774), in charge of the first embarkation’s, called it a scene of confusion, despair and desolation. The women are in great distress. They carried their children in their arms, while others pulled carts with household effects. A group of seven hundred escaped by walking six hundred miles to New Brunswick. Charles Lawrence, Governor of Nova Scotia, considered these Acadians a nuisance and a threat, easily replaced by loyal New England settlers. The population of Halifax dropped from nearly 5,000 in 1750, to about 1,500 people this year. After the great land clearance, Britain lured several thousand New Englanders north with offers of free cleared land. Farmers and craftsmen took over the fields the Acadians once tilled; fishermen settled along the Nova Scotia Atlantic coast.

1756

About 1,200 Acadians were sent to Virginia but were never let off the ships, because they had not been expected and they were not wanted. They sat on the beaches for six months. Having arrived in the fall of 1755, they were sent to England in the spring of 1756. Once in England, they were dispersed to Bristol, Falmouth, Liverpool and Southampton where they were detained (held prisoners) for seven years. When the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1763, they were repatriated to France. They did not fit there either. Their attitudes, customs, and language had changed. Other than sharing a common religion and more or less a common language, the Acadians had little in common with the French. This was tantamount to the English conducting genocide on a culture.

Quebec is overflowing with French soldiers, French and Métis Acadian refugees and Indians. (I)-Marquis Louis de Montcalm, Marquis de Montcalm (1712-1759), is ordered to head the French war in Canada. He is not happy with his appointment and considers the Canadian officers stupid. The Canadians say this is not Europe and different tactics are required. Montcalm can't control his violent temper and is known to strike the Canadians.

In Canada the British are losing forts, but in Europe the British are losing entire armies. The Englishman, William Pit, advanced a new idea- If we can't beat the French in Europe, beat them in the colonies. The English propose sending a massive navel fleet against Quebec and a land army up the Great Lakes in a pincer action.

Intendent (I)-Francois Bigot appointed Joseph Cadot as Commissary General and they used graft to steel 12 million francs. The full theft of Bigot likely totaled 24 million francs, but he lived a lavish life. (I)-Joseph Cadot, however, became the richest man in New France. Cadot was fined 6 million francs, but neither man was ever imprisoned. Chevalier de Levis wooed away intendant Francois Bigot mistress, Madame Penissault, the intendant found swift consolation in the affections of Madame Pean.
